Diggin Taters!

My grocery store seed potatoes, that I posted about HERE, actually produced some potatoes. The green part of the plant had turned yellow and so it was time to dig them. Hearing the "thud" of a potato being dropped into the bucket is a nice sound. Here are the potatoes with the dirt still clinging to them.

Maybe... 5 pounds.  It was a short little row and I used potatoes that were too old to eat.   Just enough potatoes to get that "new" potato taste.  I am pleased with how they turned out.

Obviously, these aren't the red new potatoes that Mama always grew.  Next year I will grow more and maybe different kinds.

One simple meal made with some of the smallest potatoes was hobo's.  I made the meat similar to meatloaf, topped with some of the potatoes and a little onion.  After wrapping it up with foil, I poked 3 or 4 holes in the bottom of the foil with a knife and placed the packets on a rack in a roasting pan.  This way the grease drained out into the pan and the food wasn't sitting in it.  Turned out really good!

There are some potatoes growing in the lasagna garden. It'll be interesting to see if they produce anything.

Wow!! Congrats on your tater digging!! We have done OK in the past with sweet potatoes but no luck with any others. Nothing better than a pot of green beans and new taters

I had a potato plant to sprout from the compost bin. I haven't checked it lately to see if it made any potatoes. Enjoy your taters!

I never prepared 'hobos', but now I will. Of course, I have no home grown taters to use. Will just have to persevere with store bought ones!!!!

Your picture of the hobo made my mouth water.

Someone gave my husband some left over potatoes that had been cut for planting. We had a couple of really short rows. Ours were red and we got maybe a half bushel. I'm glad we had no more than he could handle, 'cause my digging taters days are over...

Wow - that's so great! I got a bag of blue potatoes on clearance at Lowe's last month and planted them in a container since I didn't have anymore room in my garden. I'm hoping I get as many as you!
