Sew Crafty Friday
Last Saturday my daughter requested that I make her some grocery bags and some cloth napkins. "If you're not to busy Mama and I'll pay you!" Now, you know I wouldn't charge my daughter for sewing! I love to sew for my family and friends. Especially if its something they want and will enjoy. I stopped what I was doing and went to work on her request because I would be seeing her the next day and wanted to have it ready.
Her kitchen is yellow with green curtains, so I made the napkins from this fabric:
I forgot to take a picture before giving them to her, but they turned out very nice. For 12 inch square napkins, all I did was cut the fabric into 12 1/2 inch squares with my rotary cutter. I used a coordinating fabric for the back. I sewed around the edge with right sides together a 1/4 inch seam, leaving an opening for turning. Clip the corners and turn. Press the edges well and top stitch around the edge. A couple of the napkins were made from left over pieces and weren't exactly 12 inches square, but by doing this I was able to make more napkins.
She likes blue so I made her a set of blue grocery bags. This is what two of them looked like. I didn't get a picture of the third one:
I was so pleased when she called me this week to let me know that the bags worked really great for her! She used them at a Whole Foods Grocery Store and was given a 10 cents credit for each cloth bag she used. She said she put heavy things in the bags and that they were very sturdy!

They look beautiful! I've been wanting to try my hand at cloth napkins so thank you for the tips :-).
She's gonna be one stylin' shopper!
I've been into cloth napkins lately. I cut up a vintage tablecloth that had too many holes in it for napkins. I've been trying my hand at mitering corners. Not doing too bad--if you don't look closely, LOL!
If you have any more of that pretty fabric, you could make your daughter an apron to match! How cute would that be?
Those bags look great. I need to make some cloth napkins, from what you described it seems pretty simple. Plus it would cut down on paper waste.
Did you use a heavier fabric for the bags. They look so pretty, are they sturdy?
What a great idea! Those bags are fabulous and a great size for groceries.
Love those cloth shopping bags! I wish I knew how to sew. I keep meaning to buy a sewing machine and take lessons but I just don't seem to have the time!
Those are lovely - I am sure your daughter just loves them!
Hope you are having a wonderful week...
I really like bag #2! I have got to get some of these cut out! I'm so glad you posted a tutorial.
Hi, again! Thanks for the nice comment on the dress I'm making!
Awesome colors. Your daughter is so blessed to have a 'sew crafty' mom. I bet the napkins were perfect. We use cloth napkins every meal here and it's nice to know that someone else may also. I love the pattern you chose.
The bags look lovely - I'm sure your daughter was very pleased.
Great job on the bags, they look so much nicer than the ones you can buy in the store :)
What a wonderful mom you are! And I can just imagine your enjoyment in making those things for your daughter. The napkin fabric is very pretty and her shopping bags are awesome!
