Mortgage Lifter

My hubby and I bought some heirloom tomato seeds called "Mortgage Lifter". Of course, the name is what caught my eye at the store. Mortgage Lifters are supposed to be BIG tomatoes.

I was curious about the name and looked it up. It seems that back in the 1930s a guy named "Radiator Charlie" developed this tomato and sold them for $1.00 each, which was a lot in the 30s. He was able to pay off his mortgage by selling the tomatoes. His mortgage was about $6,000.00

I don't expect that growing some of our own vegetables will save us as much money as Radiator Charlie made, but it will be tasty and frugal.

In a couple of months I hope to being making sandwiches from these:

If the Mortgage Lifters grow as big as promised, I will post pictures this summer!

Happy Spring!

Good luck with your tomatoes. I can't wait until summer and I can get some fine ripened tomatoes.

You always encourage me to get with it. :) Your season is a little ahead of mine but I will most definately be on the look out for tomato plants and pansies. I do things in a small way here but those two things are on my list to brighten the days ahead.

Never heard of those tomatoes... but can't wait to see how yours do. Hey, you can try selling them for $1 a piece, and maybe you can get rid of your mortgage, too. :o)

Should be great tomatoes. When the time comes, I will ask for a
'sam-ich'.

What a great name!
I hope I have better success with tomatoes this year. I think what I did wrong last time around was I didn't water them enough and we didn't have much rain in the summer. Lesson learned!
Speaking of weather, thanks for visiting. We've had some crazy wind here, too. Sometimes it sounds downright spooky, LOL!

that is a funny name. But have you priced grocery store tomatos lately? they are so high, you almost need a 2nd mortgage to buy them :)
hope you have a very successful crop
