Frugal Tip of the Week

Since my household consists of just my hubby and me, we don't use a huge amount of milk any more. I discovered recently that buying organic milk is a good choice for us, both nutritionally and for frugal reasons. While a half gallon of organic milk costs $3.50 or more, the "use by" date is as much as a month long. So we will always use the entire carton of milk before it goes bad. After a little internet research I found that the reason organic milk last longer is that it is exposed to higher temperatures during the pasteurization process.

So, if we had a large family who drank a lot of milk, organic milk wouldn't be cost wise, but with a small family, it's something to consider.

I don't know if you realize this, but you can also freeze milk. I usually buy 3 gallons at a time because I only shop every 2 weeks. I take one of the gallons and pour a cup off and then pop it in the freezer. When I start on the 2nd gallon, I pull the third one out of the freezer so that it's thawed by the time I need it.

We don't drink a lot of milk so I freeze some to keep it from going bad, like Terri said.

That's interesting about the organic milk lasting longer. One of the little boys I used to babysit used to bring organic milk and I always wondered why the date was so long. We did research at that time and came up with nothing. :-)

Not to burst your bubble, but I would imagine that the higher temps would also destroy more of the nutrients.

I'd never heard that about the organic milk having a longer expiration date. Milk never expires at our house. My husband goes through a gallon of milk about every five days. I normally shop once every couple of weeks so I do as Terri does and freeze extra gallons. I don't find a difference in the taste and it keeps me from having to shop more often.

Glad to learn that milk can be frozen, we by the non fat milk that "tastes like 2%", my hubby doesn't like non fat but he was willing to try this and liked it, the smaller container is also a plus. This milk also has a long expiration date and I wondered why, probably the same reason.

With all the milk my teenagers get through it may be easier for us to put a cow in the back garden.......great to know milk can be frozen, I always worry it may not taste as good.......our milk is delivered to the door early every morning by our local milkman.
