Here's what the back spash looks like so far. An electrician will need to come to adjust the outlets so that when the covers are put back on they will be even with the back splash.
We chose basic white subway tile since it goes with most any color and hopefully will be timeless.

I love white in kitchens Our backsplash is also white tiles but just squares.

I'm with you on the choice of white. It may never be the height of fashion, but it will never look silly and dated either. And a woman with your skills will find other ways to bring in some color.
