Happy Birthday!

Its a month of birthdays at my house! Today is my hubby's and I'd like to wish him a very happy birthday!

I had plans for a very pretty "professional" cake, but with a combination of a lack of time and experience, this is what I ended up with! Please don't laugh... I did put a lot of love into it!

I wanted to make my NC State fan an NC State Cake! These are links to the kinds of cakes I dreamed of making:

Oh, well, Next time.

The hardest thing was that the icing wouldn't get red enough, no matter how much red food coloring I put into it. Then the Tupperware cake container doesn't allow enough room on the bottom sides to pipe a shell border. I'm still learning, that's sure!

My Mother-in-law has given me all her cake decorating supplies. She says red and black are the two hardest colors to get dark enough. I'm not any good at it either, but I love trying.

Hi Debbie,
Another great cake, boy sure wish I was your neighbor :) Paste food coloring will give you a truer red. And just a hint...use a toothpick to write out your words and then use the icing.

PS If this is alittle garbled I have a nbaby on my lap!!!!

Just a tip! Did you use Wilton icing colors to tint your frosting? They come individually at a little over a dollar per color. They work much better than food coloring. Hope that helps!

I think this cake looks great! My DD Nina does our cake decorating as I tried it years ago but did not like doing. She loves doing it and charges lots of money for her cakes.

Happy birtday to your hubby!

Happy Birthday to your husband!!! Those kind of cakes (the ones that were your inspiration) do take a lot of time - so much small stuff to do. You did great on this, and I know your honey will love that you made it just for him!

Red, Black and even dark brown are the hardest. When I took classes in Houston, they had a brand called Country Kitchen. They have powdered colors and another brand of gel (squeeze bottle) by Americraft, I think. Do a search for them if you can't find a local place. Wilton's red is not easy to mix in. Also, mix colors a day in advance to let them "set", they will darken and you will also see if you have spots that did not "take". I avoid reds if possible and blacks. Another tip for black is to make chocolate icing then tint that black, less "ground to cover" since you are starting with a naturally dark icing.
