A Hobo Pocketbook

I am really back into my sewing mode again!

Last night I designed a new pattern for a hobo style pocketbook. This bag was just a practice bag. I made the pattern and completed the bag after work last night. It definitely needs some work! The bag isn't deep enough to hold any of my stuff and I think the bottom is too wide. I will be working on getting this pattern right this weekend!

What do you think of the fabric? I wasn't too sure about it at first, but think its kind of cute after the bag was finished. It was fabric that was in my stash which I found at the thrift store a couple of years ago. I really need to use the fabric that I already have, but when I look at it, its just not what I want to make pocketbooks out of! I suppose I should look at the fabric and then decide what to make from it that's suitable for that particular piece of fabric, instead of picking a project first.

I think you did well considering you made it up along the way. Good job!

You know I have no knowledge about sewing, but I wonder since you quilt if you used different quilting squares to make purses too. You could use several different patterns to make up a purse? Just wondering...

I love the fabric. Looks very "retro" which is really in style right now.

Looking forward to seeing the next one... I thought it looked "not deep enough".. but the fabric is pretty... I couldn't even start to make anything without a pattern.. you are so talented...

Hi Debbie,
How pretty. I bought some fabric this week end. I am going to get busy sewing next week. Christmas will be here before I can blink an eye.
Hugs,

I think the fabric looks very summery. It could work well with someone who has a certain type of style. Maybe you can choose some project with the pattern first and some with the fabric first.

Very nice bag! You know, a lot of the purses they sell these days are VERY tiny! I'm not sure size matters at all! Your fabric choice will definitly appeal to someone (if you are planning on selling it...) It's always a good idea to use a piece that may not be your favorite when you are in the beginning stages of design - use your favorite after you get your pattern perfected!

I had to laugh about your question if anyone still goes by the old rule of white shoes in the summer...every year I tease myself and say, "Now I can wear my ratty white tennis shoes for another summer!"

Have a good week!

You did a very neat and professional job. I agree with Pen Pen that the fabric looks stylishly retro.

The fabric, which I love, reminds me of the kind that my mom would have used when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's. I agree with C.C., I'm sure there are lots of people out there that would be interested in your small bag.
