Frugal Friday - The lunch box drawer

Today is Frugal Friday at Life As Mom.

One of the most frugal tips of all is to pack yours and your family's lunch for work or school. Now that those children who aren't home schooled are about to head back to school, its time to really begin to plan for this and also to stock up on some lunch items.

My husband and I have been diligently taking our lunches to work for a while now. When I see lunch box type items on sale I try to buy them and stock up. So this week I dedicated an area of my pantry to lunch box "easy to grab" items.

Our main source for lunches are leftovers. My hubby goes ahead and puts the leftovers into small plastic containers with lids in the refrigerator, which are the perfect size for grabbing when you are in a hurry. This week I made homemade vegetable soup on the one day that our temperatures actually stayed below 90! I then thoroughly enjoyed having this soup along with a pimento cheese sandwich for lunch the next day.

I'm planning to make myself a cute lunch box soon which will make taking my lunch even more pleasant.

Great idea, I remember when I did work outside the home, packed lunches were more likely to happen if I made things quick and easy to grab.

I always take my lunch to work. It saves so much money. I'm amazed at the girls who "order out" everyday.......$6-7 a day!!!

Yes, bringing your lunch to work saves a boatload of money, especially when you think of X amount of dollars multiplied by 52 weeks/year! There are better things to spend that money on. Good for you for sticking with it, and I bet that soup was really good too.

That does make it SO much easier to have all of the items in one place. =) Great reminder!

Debbie,
My daughter and I have both fixed packed lunches for a long time. It lets me rest at lunch instead of run out to get lunch. I can also make lists and prepare for my afternoon if need be. Saving the $ is a real plus too. I love that you keep reminding us of frugal ideas. Some of them I do and some of them I am just beginning because of your encouragement. :) Thanks!

It's so much easier when everything is organized. Another great frugal tip.

I pack a cooler full for for my hubby everyday. He loves having good, real food. He says many of his coworkers get their breakfast and lunch from fast food places. Can you imagine how much that would add up too - and how unhealthy it is?

even with me being at home, I like to have a single serve of leftovers ready to heat up for my lunch too.

PS - can't wait to see the pretty lunch bag you sew up :)

Debbie,

I have to go back to work Mon. :(

Great idea.

Time to think of packing those lunches again! I know some ladies that eat out of the vending machines everyday. I'd much rather pack a lunch!

I enjoyed reading about your lunch ideas. When you get your lunchbox made, you'll have to share a photo!

I'm looking forward to seeing the lunch bag too. It may help me do the same. How fun to make my own.

We have quite a collection of containers with tight fitting lids too!
I try and make sure there is enough food for leftovers for lunch and we back that up with sandwiches, if needed. Some fruit, a yogurt and sometimes a salad completes my husband's lunch. We have a tiny little bottle with a cap for salad dressing.
It helps that there is a fridge and microwave at work. He just puts his lunchbag in the fridge till time to eat.
